Durham City Golf Club in Langley Moor is a beautiful course on the banks of the River Browney and will be welcoming golfers from “all four corners of the North East” for the special competition, which is being organised by former firefighter, Glenn Blaney.

Everyone at the club is proud to be hosting the event that will see 14 teams competing and raising funds to help find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

Club Secretary, Jeff Shield, says: “This is a golf club with a history going all the way back to 1887 and one of our more recent chapters involves Sir Bobby.

“About 20 years ago we hosted a series of dinners with local sportsmen like Niall Quinn, Kevin Phillips and County Durham’s favourite son, Sir Bobby Robson. We loved having him here and he enjoyed playing the course, too.

“Supporting his cancer charity feels very much like the right thing to do and we’re looking forward to welcoming old faces and new to play at the club.”

Event organiser, Glenn Blaney from Morpeth is a passionate golfer and Glenn Blaney with Emma McQuitty (Fundraising Coordinator Newcastle Hospitals Charity)supporter of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

He says: “I know Sir Bobby loved his golf, so I think he’d be very happy with this competition. We’ve had a great response already from sign ups and event sponsors and there’s still plenty of time for people to get involved.

“Durham City is a fantastic course to play with beautiful greens and I’m sure we’ll have a great day and raise money for a very important cause in the process.”

The charity golf day at Durham City Golf Club on Friday 2 August is a four ball competition and teams cost £200 to enter. For more information, please contact Glenn Blaney by emailing glennb2010@hotmail.co.uk or calling 0758 4357 313.
