A new play inspired by Sir Bobby’s life and legacy, and raising money for our charity, has received backing from Alan Shearer ahead of its opening night this July.

‘Bobby Robson Saved My Life’ explores how one person can have a dramatic effect on the life of another without ever knowing it and is the fictional story of three very different individuals.

Foundation Patron, Alan Shearer

Written by Jarrow playwright, Tom Kelly, the play has captured the imagination of both theatre and football fans alike, who have been sharing their own thoughts about Sir Bobby using the hashtag #3wordsforBobby.

Alan, a Patron of our Foundation, is the latest to share his ‘three words’ via a video message and described his former Newcastle United manager as, “Passionate, committed and professional.”

Alan says: “I think it’s well known that Sir Bobby had a huge effect on me and my football career. Without him coming in as manager, I’d probably have left Newcastle United. And knowing the man as I did, I can well believe that he also had a positive effect on people who may never even have met him.

“In fact, I meet people all the time who are raising money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and they tell me what an inspiration Sir Bobby is to them.

Ray Spencer, Charlie Richmond and Gareth Hunter

“I’m sure ‘Bobby Robson Saved My Life’ will be very well-received and I hope it raises a lot of money to support the work of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.”

Other #3wordsforBobby messages have been shared by George Burley (Ipswich Town), Pete Graves (Sky Sports), Jeff Brown (BBC), Ian Payne (ITV), Lee Clark (NUFC and Blyth Spartans), John Carver (NUFC) and Steve Watson (NUFC).

Charlie Richmond, actor and co-producer of the play, says: “We’re very grateful to Alan for his backing and so glad the #3wordsforBobby campaign is being well-supported. It’s fascinating hearing the words people choose to best describe Sir Bobby and which come up most often.

“Sir Bobby was an inspiration for many people because of the way he lived his life and of course because of the amazing work of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which we’re proud to be helping though this play.

“It’s fantastic to have support from someone like Alan who knew Sir Bobby well but we’re just as happy to hear from people who may never have met the great man. The #3wordsforBobby video messages will become part of every performance, so there’s always a chance you might see or hear yourself on stage if you upload a video via our social media.”

‘Bobby Robson Saved My Life’ is directed by Jamie Brown and co-produced by Ion Productions and Quayside Productions in association with The Customs House in South Shields.

The play promises to be heart-warming, inspirational and uplifting and opens at The Customs House on 16th July, where it runs until the 20th July. It will then be performed at the Ipswich Regent on 31st July, the 10th anniversary of Sir Bobby’s passing, before returning to the North East for two nights at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle (2-4 August).

Every performance will raise funds for our Foundation.
