SIR BOBBY’S TEAM 2023

With the fantastic support of Sir Brendan Foster, a group of football writers are teaming up this September to run the world’s largest half marathon, the AJ Bell Great North Run.

Sir Bobby’s Team 2022

Together, Sir Bobby’s Team, will be fundraising for our Foundation to help find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

They will be joined by Sir Bobby’s youngest son, Mark Robson, and Keith Farquharson, a cancer patient who is taking part in a drug trial at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre.

Keith Farquharson

Keith from Newcastle, was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2017. At the time, he was told that half of people with his diagnosis would die within a year and Keith credits the treatment he is receiving at the Sir Bobby Robson Centre with extending his life.

It is likely to be an emotional day for the Sir Bobby’s Team runners and for all our wonderful supporters who are challenging themselves to complete the famous race from Newcastle to South Shields.

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone at the finish, where Sir Bobby’s family will, as always, be volunteering to provide refreshments and a big well done for tired runners in our Charity Village tent.

The Athletic’s George Caulkin is part of Sir Bobby’s Team and is also a Patron of our Foundation. He is looking forward to meeting up with his fellow football writers before the race and catching up with all our runners in the Charity Village afterwards.

Sir Brendan Foster and George Caulkin

George says: “I’m incredibly proud to be running for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and I know everyone else is feeling the same. Whether you’ve got loads of runs under your belt or if this is your first Great North Run, it’s a hugely special day. The atmosphere and sense of togetherness all along the route with the crowds cheering and shouting your name, sharing ice-pops and just being there, is like nothing else.

“Genuinely, it’s my favourite day of the year and emotions always bubble to the surface because you’re running for Sir Bobby and for people like my friend Keith, who are benefitting from the pioneering work funded by the charity. It’s no wonder Sir Bobby described his Foundation as his last and greatest team.”

Sir Bobby’s Team also includes Jacob Whitehead, Dominic King, James Pearce, Laura Williamson, Matt Lawton, Michael Bailey, Andrew Musgrove, Kevin Coulson, Miles Starforth and Laurie Whitwell.

Please support the work of our Foundation by sponsoring Sir Bobby’s Team for this year’s AJ Bell Great North Run here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/sirbobbysteam.

Everyone kind enough to sponsor the runners will be entered into a random prize draw to win a very special Sir Bobby’s Team t-shirt (size large). Please note, this does not include anonymous donations, the lucky winner will be informed via email and the t-shirt will be posted to a UK address.

Our thanks to all our Great North Runners and to everyone supporting them. We wish you the very best of luck with your training!
