BEST FOOT FORWARD THIS NEW YEAR!
The latest addition to Newcastle’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, the HogmanHOWAY 5K, has revealed it is supporting the work of our Foundation and we are the event’s first official charity partner.
The brainchild of North East athletics legend Steve Cram, the HogmanHOWAY 5K is sponsored by Develop North PLC. It is being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Newcastle City Council and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.
Starting and finishing at the Civic Centre and following a route on closed roads around the city, the flat run will give an opportunity for keen runners of every generation and ability to celebrate New Year’s Eve by getting active together.
By supporting our Foundation, part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, runners will be fundraising for a new, world-leading cancer research and treatment centre for patients across the North East, north Cumbria and North Yorkshire.
The proposed Sir Bobby Robson Institute will pioneer more ground-breaking innovation in cancer treatment and significantly increase the number of clinical trials available regionally, as well as contributing globally to cancer research.
Plans have been submitted to build the Institute next to The Northern Centre for Cancer Care at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and construction is being funded by our Foundation, with £20million already raised by supporters and a final £10million needed to complete the project.
Jane Curry, Newcastle Hospitals Charity community fundraising manager, says: “We’re grateful to have been chosen as the very first official charity of the HogmanHOWAY 5K.
“Not only does the event give runners the chance to support our work, it is encouraging family and friends to take part in a little gentle exercise together. What a fantastic way to end the year and to start the next on the right foot!”
Steve Cram adds: “We’re delighted to team up with The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which does some vital work in our region, and the plans for the institute look amazing. Running events are always a great opportunity to support good causes and this is one of the best. It will be a brilliant end to the year if we can help the Foundation raise loads of money at the first HogmanHOWAY 5K.”
