HOGMANHOWAY 5K DOWN UNDER!

Australia may celebrate New Year’s Eve as much as 11 hours before we do in the UK, but that doesn’t mean British expats on the continent will forget about us.

In fact, unable to be in the region to join in with the HogmanHOWAY 5K in Newcastle, a number of North Easterners who now call Australia home are doing their own 5K Down Under to raise money for our Foundation.

The latest addition to Newcastle’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, the HogmanHOWAY 5K is a flat run for all abilities through closed roads in the city, and we are proud to be its first official charity partner.

Starting and finishing at the Civic Centre, it is an opportunity for runners of every generation and ability to celebrate New Year’s Eve by getting active together.

In Sydney, Iain Chisholm and Tresna Tunbridge, will be running their own HogmanHOWAY 5K at Bondi Beach while elsewhere in Australia, there will be runs in Brisbane, Canberra and Perth.

Iain, originally from Walker, Newcastle, is a long-time supporter of our Foundation.

He says: “Tresna and I would love to be in the North East to do the HogmanHOWAY 5K in person but that’s not possible this year. We don’t want to miss out though, and doing our own thing in Australia to raise funds for Sir Bobby’s Foundation is the next best thing.

“Getting out for a gentle run is a great way to round off the year and knowing we’re supporting a charity that’s doing such important things for cancer research in the North East makes it even better.”

By supporting our Foundation, HogmanHOWAY 5K runners will be fundraising for a new, world-leading cancer research and treatment centre for patients across the North East, north Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

The Sir Bobby Robson Institute will pioneer more ground-breaking innovation in cancer treatment and significantly increase the number of clinical trials available regionally, as well as contributing globally to cancer research.

Plans have been approved to build the Institute next to The Northern Centre for Cancer Care at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and construction is being funded by our Foundation, with £20million already raised by supporters and a final £10million needed to complete the project.

The brainchild of North East athletics legend Steve Cram, the HogmanHOWAY 5K is sponsored by Develop North PLC. It is being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Newcastle City Council and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.

Choosing to fundraise £20 for our Foundation, entry to the HogmanHOWAY 5K is just £10. For more information or to sign up, please visit: https://newcastlehospitalscharity.beaconforms.com/form/5cbc07d7.
